Notes: Chapters from a Broken Novel premiered at the Quick Center for the Arts in Fairfield, CT on October 1, 2010. The work was developed at the 92nd Street Y School of the Arts Harkness Dance Center as part of its artist in residency program.
The creation of Chapters from a Broken Novel was made possible through public funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Chapters from a Broken Novel received commissioning support from the Bates Dance Festival, Portland Ovations, San Francisco Performances, the University of Akron, and the National Performance Network Creative Fund.
Major commissioning support for the composition of David Van Tieghem’s original score was furnished by the Charles and Joan Gross Family Foundation. This commission was also made possible by American Music Center and was a part of a national series of works from Meet The Composer’s Commissioning Music/USA Program, which is made possible by generous support from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, the Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trusts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, New York State Council on the Arts, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Helen F. Whitaker Fund.
Additionally, the touring of Chapters from a Broken Novel is funded in part by the National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts. Notes: Alchemy takes its inspiration directly from the Steve Reich score, which juxtaposes text from the biblical book of Daniel and the words of Daniel Pearl, the American journalist kidnapped and murdered by Islamist extremists in Pakistan in 2002. Reich's music pays homage to all victims who, in the face of violence and cruelty, courageously reveal the dignity and beauty of humanity.
Alchemy was commissioned by the University of Akron and E.J. Thomas Hall. It was funded with support from the National Endowment for the ARts, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Harkness Foundation, the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. The work was developed at the 92nd Street Y as part of their artist in residency program.
